Those Creatures From Ganon Are Pretty Bad
We can play it on my Nintendo Entertainment System

This video was ripped by me several years ago now, and has since found some spread over the internet. It is the commercial aired for the original Legend of Zelda.

The Legend of Finding the Commercial for The Legend of Zelda
Like so many other great things to happen, finding this commercial happened by complete accident. I was watching an old tape of cartoons, that we had recorded when we were kids, labeled Popples. There were some other cartoons on the tape too, including the cartoon version of Jim Henson's Fraggle Rock. Some commercial breaks were skipped, but a few commercials did slip through.
During one of the commercial breaks in Fraggle Rock, the commercial for The Legend of Zelda was completely recorded, followed by half of a MacDonald's Happy Meal commercial before the break was cut off. Laughing hysterically at the commercial, I had to share it. I showed my friends to start with, and then I used the microphone jack on the computer to record the commercial into a wav file, which I uploaded to my website on August 28, 1998.
The wav file was the only version of the commercial circulating for a couple years, but one Christmas the family decided to get a new computer, and on that new computer was a video capture card. The first thing I thought of was to rip the video of that commercial, even though it had by then been a couple of years since I had initially ripped the wav. I searched for the tape in my bedroom where I had been storing it, but i wasn't there. I searched through all of our old tapes, and still it was nowhere to be found. I gave up hope, and was pretty upset that it was gone. I feared that I would never again get to show it to my friends, let alone put it on the internet now.
A few months passed however, and I found the tape when getting one of my NES games back from my sister's room. Unfortunately though, the tape, which was on the floor, which was littered with so much clothing and other stuff that you could barely see the floor, was broken. The tape must have been over wound, and had snapped. The tape was nearly always wound directly to the spot before the commercial as well (since I often showed it to people), so I feared that it may have been ruined right at the commercial. I don't give up so easily though, and decided to try fixing the tape. I carefully opened the cassette, and used clear Scotch Tape to repair it as carefully as I could.
I was extremely happy when the tape actually played, and the commercial was fully intact. The second thing I did with the tape, once it was repaired, was to rip the video onto the computer (the first thing was watching it on the VCR to see if I had succeeded).
The video was encoded into an mpeg and uploaded to my website, where it has since been, on March 25, 2001. I never watermarked it, which I regret somewhat. It would be nice to be certain that everyone knew I ripped it after putting so much into it, but I suppose even if just a few people appreciate me it's alright. I may rip the video again some time if I get a new capture card, then I'll likely do that and make the video better quality as well.
Anyway, enjoy the video and laugh at what video game advertising used to be like.
